Peter Schmid of Atelier Zobel
August 11 – September 30, 2023
Above & Below
In celebration of the beginning of Patina Gallery’s 25th year, we are thrilled to announce our first exhibition, Above & Below, with friend and master metalsmith Peter Schmid of Atelier Zobel. We invite friends and collectors to join us, as we venture into the world of Schmid’s newest creations inspired by exotic deep sea.
A portion of the proceeds from Above & Below will go to support the Santa Fe Opera’s Apprentice Program for Theater Technicians.
Established in 1965, the program offers intermediate to advanced training. The program includes instruction and practical experience in stage operations, properties, audio & video, costumes, production/music services, make up and wig construction, stage lighting and scenic art.
To explore beneath the surface of the ocean is to be awed by a serene and silent world hidden beyond our imagination.
The jewelry of Peter Schmid is internationally revered for Schmid’s attention to detail, his fusion of metals, his gemstone settings, and the fluid movement his pieces share in astounding craftsmanship, design, and style. Schmid’s intoxicating works of art have defined an innovative legacy in the 21st Century and have been exhibited at Patina for over 23 years.
A collection by Peter Schmid of Atelier Zobel, infused with the exotic luster of the deep sea, astounds the eye once again with his brilliant imagination. Schmid marvelously pairs scale and proportion to compose bold pieces for the body inspired by the mysterious depths of the oceans, filling our imaginations with feelings of wonder, awe, and curiosity.
“I am so intrigued about the beauty of the ocean, a place which is relatively unknown for us. It embodies so many hidden treasures that we don’t even know about making it feel so supernatural yet wondrous and mystical”
Peter Schmid
Every composition comes straight from the soul. With every natural inclusion, pitting or imperfection, he proudly shares the story of his stones. Each surface feature tells of a journey as it travels from one hand to the next. In turn, his works become more true, authentic, and beautiful.
“The interplay between stone, crystal, metal, and light creates the deep beauty and coruscating colors of jewelry. Matching and bringing out color is one of the greatest challenges of our art. It calls for courage and sensibility, as well as knowledge about how rich and subtle shades and hues interact”
Peter Schmid
Crafting a dialogue between opulent gemstones and avant-garde art, Schmid captivates us with his beguiling and exotic jewelry. Precious gemstones are his constant muse as he builds opulent frames around them, amplifying their inherent glint and glamour. Impressive alchemy plays a role in jewels often immersed in a mixture of platinum, silver, and high karat gold. No matter which gem is the leading sparkle, he manages to gracefully add sprinkles of surface-set diamonds wherever his imagination takes him.
Behold the enigmatic jewels of the ocean, adequately poised for perfection on the body, and fulfill your most coveted desire in Schmid’s wondrous creations.
