Hand knit leather, oxidized sterling silver, vintage vinyl beads
Captivated by the tactile, utilitarian qualities of the basket and other historically significant manifestations from the fiber arts, artist, Brooke Marks-Swanson seeks to interpret that purpose through her contemporary works of adornment.
Here, Swanson knits a leather laden masterpiece to comfortably wear around the neck. Its soft, smooth surfaces are palpable to the touch as they are an array of delight to behold. Working with a muted palette to please the eye, she knits a concoction of alabaster and marigold to balance the vast textile lattice. Approaching the core of her work, a vivacious field of undulating silver and flattened vinyl discs comprise a multi-faceted arrangement of complex composition. Underneath their dark assemblage are the tracings of crimson, white, lavender and black leather stitchings. Swanson cleverly teases the eye with her selections of color as one tries to decipher the intriguing dichotomy taking place behind its billowing surface. On the body the piece is a striking work, which rests peacefully upon the collar. Yet, rather a dynamic and abstract beauty to discover and ever a treasure to wear in its unparalleled magnificence.
