Roberto Cardinale presents the Santiago Apostle Tower, built in 1569 in Tecali, Mexico.

Cardinale's sculptures are artistic expressions of famous church edifices. Inspired by the Santiago Apostal Tower, built in 1519 by in Tecali, Mexico by Claudio de ArciniegaCardinale captures several elements that nod to the original chapel. Using his own artist mastery, the artist constructs this fortress - like building from rough sawn. It’s layer rooflines and mixtures of color and texture, gives the works an aged appearance suggesting the history and wear the structure has endured. All expertly and exquisitely honor scale and proportion. The base as well as the underside of the structure is signed by the artist.

This sculpture is a part of the Fortress Monastery Series. The fortress-like buildings were not meant as defensive structures, but rather to impress the Indian converts as a symbol of the might of Christianity, the new religion and a demonstration of power.
