Oxidized sterling silver, 18K yellow gold, spectrolite
“A brooch is like a painting, with a palette of many possibilities.” - Harold O’Connor
Amongst a body of sterling silver, O’Connor builds the foundation of his work. The artist imbues a scattering of texture over the brooch’s surface, fitly endowed across a lustrous horizon. Adding dimension to the piece, he folds the flush, silvery plane. Coined edges are soldered around its perimeter to distinguish composition while the eye traces its undulant trim. Placed on the sides of the brooch lay two spectrolite stones in varying shape and hue. With expert care for proportion, the maker eloquently positions its green, triangular form in pleasant asymmetry, adjacent to an elongated sliver in blue. High karat gold pours into a trail over the silver terrain. Tiny granules are fused and diligently hammered onto its surface. The gold melds perfectly with the grander form, as if foliage upon an arcane field of mystery and intrigue. On the body, the piece thrills with its breathtaking beauty, and graciously lauds the one who adorns its luscious vivacity. The brooch may be worn with the easeful opening of the catch and release of its silver pin. A silver chain may attach to the piece with an adapter placed over the pin stem to allow the piece to be worn as a pendant around the neck. O’Connor demonstrates a skillful and discerning eye for material and structure as he imagines a work of exquisite soul-stirring adornment.
