Born in Roswell, New Mexico, Susan Graham has been a major presence in opera houses around the world since her international debut at Covent Garden in 1994. She is famous for her French song repertoire and was honored by the French government as a Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres. Her extensive recordings include her Grammy Award in 2004 for Best Classical Vocal Performance for her album of songs by Charles Ives. Since her debut here in 1989, she has appeared in twelve operas on the Santa Fe Opera stage as well as numerous recitals. This year she sings Geneviéve in Peléas et Mélisande at the SFO.
While we were working in my studio, I asked Susan if she could sing something. “Put on Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody!’” she said. She rattled the windows of that very large room with that voice that has filled enormous stages the world over. I was intimidated by that sound and her towering stature, but her manner is anything but.
